Fourth Year of Lawrence School's Himalayan Trip. Reaching the summit of Chandrashila peak at 4000 meters, climbing up to the world's highest Shiv temple- Tungnath, trekking the himalayas covered in snow, camping besides the beautiful Deoria Tal, rafting in the rapids of the mighty Alaknanda River were just some of the activities that these kids did for their outdoor learning trip to the Himalayas. Unexplored India- Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, North East Ch. 3 We travelled to Ziro, home of Apatani tribe, to attend a local cultural festival called Dree in July, 2017. One of my friend from Shillong managed to arrange the stay for us in traditional houses of Apatani Tribe in Ziro village. After, hiring a taxi and crossing several landslides and road full of pot holes, we reached the rolling fields of Paddy in a wide flat valley surrounded by hills full of forests. A perfect setting of a village straight out of Wes Anderson's movies. Huge local croud gathered for the festival, which in a way didn't help us (as per filming), as the people were busy in festival and they didn't do their normal daily routine which we really wanted to capture. But, still all in all the stay was amazing, the place breathtaking and the festival, colourful. One of the main attraction for visiting Ziro was witnessing the Face Tattoos and Nose Plugs of Apatani Women, which came into practice to avoid the kidnappings of Apatani women by other tribes, reason being Apatani Women were extremely beautiful. Though, this practice was abolished near the Indian Independence. So the remaining few Women who still have the tattoos and nose plugs remain very few and are in age range of above 50 years. Getting the shots of these elderly Women on video was not easy at all as they were quite shy about the camera and in some way vary of it, which is quite understandable, apatani and ziro being a tourist attraction now and a lot of enthusiasts visiting to capture the Aapatanis. But, this video is just a short peek in general around Ziro capturing the village, kids, festival, landscape and Paddy fields. I hope this gives you enough to plan your exploring in this valley and the culture of Apatani Tribe and the cultural festivals.
